Get Ready for 16 New TVET College Campuses!
The South African Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation has made significant progress in its efforts to improve access and success in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system. As part of this initiative, the department has embarked on a project to introduce 16 new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College campuses throughout the country.
With a total investment of R2.88 billion, the construction and refurbishment of these campuses aim to provide better educational opportunities for students across the nation. The department’s goal is to complete all 16 campuses by the end of the 2024 academic year.
The First 10 Campuses
Ten campuses have already been completed and are ready to welcome students. These campuses include Thabazimbi, Umzimkhulu, Graaf-Reinet, Nongoma, Msinga, Aliwal North, Kwagqikazi, Ngqungqushe, Nkandla A, and Bhambanani.
In addition to the construction of the 16 new campuses, the department has also expanded its Centers of Specialization. Currently, there are 34 centers across 20 TVET colleges, providing students with specialized training in various fields. The department invested R68 million to accomplish this expansion.
The department has also made significant progress in establishing Trade Test Centers. With only one Trade Test Centre in the country during apartheid, the department now boasts a total of 35 Trade Test Centers located in 16 TVET Colleges. This expansion provides more opportunities for students to gain practical skills and certifications.
Partnerships for Success
The department has recognized the importance of partnerships with the private sector in providing valuable training and workplace experience for TVET College students and lecturers. These partnerships create a bridge between education and industry, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful employment.
Entrepreneurship hubs have also been established at TVET Colleges to support students in developing the skills needed for self-employment. These hubs provide resources and guidance to enable students to start their own businesses upon completion of their programs.
Plans for Completion
The department is working diligently to complete the remaining six campuses. Greytown, Strekspruit, and Balfour are scheduled to be completed in 2024. Enrollment for the remaining three campuses will begin in 2024/25, once the construction is finalized.
The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation has made significant strides in expanding access to quality education through the construction and refurbishment of TVET College campuses. With the completion of all 16 campuses, more South African students will have the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success in their chosen fields.
