Applying for SASSA Child Grant: What Documents Do I Need?
Children who live in South Africa are entitled to a Child Support Grant, which is given to their primary caregiver. This grant is provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to help low-income households meet the basic needs of their children. In order to apply for the SASSA Child Grant, there are certain requirements and documents you need to fulfill. Read on to find out more about this grant and how to apply for it.
Eligibility for the SASSA Child Grant
The Child Support Grant is available to primary caregivers of children, including parents, grandparents, or other individuals who are responsible for taking care of the child. To qualify for the grant, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
- If you are single, your monthly income should not exceed R4,000 (R48,000) per month. If you are married, your combined income should not exceed R96,000 per year (R8,000 per month).
- If you are not the child’s parent, you need to provide proof of being the primary caregiver. This can be a police officer’s statement, the child’s biological parent’s letter, a social worker’s report, or a letter from the school principal.
- The child must be under 18 years old, not in the care of a state institution, and live with the primary caregiver who is not paid to look after the child.
- The primary caregiver must not be living outside of South Africa.
- The grant cannot be given if more than six children who are not legally adopted or biological children are under your care. It also cannot be awarded if someone else has already received the grant for the child.
Application Process
To apply for the SASSA Child Grant, you need to visit your nearest SASSA office and fill out an application form with the assistance of a SASSA officer. The application process is free, and you will receive a receipt as proof of your application. Documents you should bring include:
- A bar-coded South African ID
- An ID number on the child’s birth certificate
- Proof of income, such as salary slips, bank statements, pension statements, or any other relevant documents
- If unemployed, a UIF card (known as a “blue book”) and a discharge certificate from your previous employer
- Written permission from the child’s guardian if you are not the parent or guardian
- Evidence of your attempts to obtain maintenance from the child’s parents if you are not the parent or guardian
- Proof that you are the primary caregiver for the child
Grant Amount and Payment Method
If your grant application is approved, you will receive R440 per child per month. During the application process, you can specify how you would like the grant to be paid. It can be received in cash or electronically into your bank account on certain days of the month. You can change your payment method by filling out a form, but the change will take effect after one month.
Payment Schedule and Changes
Once your grant application is approved, SASSA will begin making payments within three months. If your application is rejected, you won’t receive any payments. It’s important to note that if your circumstances or the child’s circumstances change, you must inform SASSA. Payments will be stopped if the child passes away, turns 18, the caregiver doesn’t claim for three consecutive months, the child is absent from the country, or the child is admitted to a state institution. SASSA will regularly check for these changes.
